Considering a move to the picturesque town of McCall, Idaho? You've chosen wisely! Nestled in the heart of the Gem State, McCall offers stunning natural beauty, a tight-knit community, and a lifestyle that feels like a permanent vacation. But, of course, before you pack your bags and head for the hills, it's essential to understand the nitty-gritty of the cost of living in our little mountain paradise.
Housing Costs:
Let's start with the big one – housing. McCall's real estate market has a variety of options, from condos to cozy cabins to spacious single family homes. While prices have been on the rise due to the town's popularity and the state's unprecedented growth rate, we are seeing a balancing of the market and therefore a pretty big slowdown in price increases. It's advisable to work with a local Realtor (hint: like me!) who knows the ins and outs of the McCall housing market to find the perfect home within your budget.
Utilities and Transportation:
Utilities in McCall are fairly standard, but it's wise to factor in slightly higher heating costs during the winter due to the colder climate. Having multiple sources of heat in your home can balance out some costs. I have a wood burning stove, propane forced air and a small electric heater in the master bedroom to keep it toasty. If you live in the City limits, water and sewer hookups are provided but outside of the city you’ll have a well for water and a septic system. Transportation costs can be minimal if you're within walking or biking distance to work and local amenities, but it is not uncommon for people to commute from Cascade, Donnelly or New Meadows into McCall for work or shopping for groceries, with Cascade the furthest at about a half-hour drive. There is a free bus service, the Green Line, which runs from McCall to Cascade year-round too!
Groceries and Dining Out
Grocery prices in McCall are a little higher than national averages, so you might find a slight increase in some items due to the town's remote location. Dining out can be a delightful experience with a range of eateries offering everything from local cuisine to international flavors. Frenchie’s on Third offers New Orleans fare and nightly specials, Pueblo Lindo features authentic Mexican food and there are many cafes and lunch spots to grab a bite at. Foresters in downtown has a unique bar and live music if you’re looking for some fun after dinner. Budget-friendly and high-end options coexist harmoniously, ensuring there's something for every palate and wallet.
Entertainment and Outdoor Activities:
Here's where McCall truly shines. Many of our best activities – hiking, biking, fishing, and skiing – are practically free once you've invested in the right gear. Our community also hosts numerous free/cheap events throughout the year, including summer concerts at Brundage Mountain and social events at the Ponderosa Center, ensuring there's always something exciting happening without breaking the bank.
Quality of Life:
When assessing the cost of living, it's crucial to consider the unparalleled quality of life McCall offers. The clean mountain air, the breathtaking scenery, and the strong sense of community – these intangible benefits are priceless. McCall isn't just a place to live; it's a lifestyle that promotes well-being, outdoor adventure, and a genuine sense of belonging.
So, there you have it – a sneak peek into the cost of living in McCall, Idaho. While it's essential to budget wisely, the investment you make in this extraordinary community goes far beyond dollars and cents.
